The Intelligent Lightning Activity Surveillance and Early Warning Device is an advanced embedded system designed to detect and monitor lightning activity in real time and provide early warning notifications to enhance public safety. The system employs an ESP32 microcontroller integrated with a lightning detection sensor to continuously monitor atmospheric electrical disturbances associated with thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
Upon detecting lightning activity, the ESP32 analyzes the sensor data and classifies the threat level based on the intensity and frequency of detected events. The system provides immediate notifications through an OLED display, RGB status indicator, and buzzer alarm, enabling users to take preventive actions before hazardous weather conditions become critical.
The OLED display presents real-time lightning status, alert levels, and system information, while the RGB indicator visually represents safety conditions:
Green: Normal atmospheric conditions
Yellow: Lightning activity detected nearby
Red: High-risk lightning threat detected
The device is powered by a 3S lithium-ion battery pack with battery protection provided by a BMS, and regulated power is supplied through buck converters. An SMPS can be used for charging and continuous operation. The compact and portable design makes the system suitable for deployment in outdoor environments where lightning poses significant risks.
The proposed system can be utilized in agricultural fields, construction sites, sports complexes, educational campuses, renewable energy installations, airports, industrial facilities, and other open-area environments. By providing timely warnings and continuous surveillance of atmospheric electrical activity, the system contributes to improved operational safety, risk mitigation, and protection of human life and critical infrastructure.
